The incident information comes from what sources?
The information in the Memphis Homicide Tracker comes from the Memphis Police Homicide Bureau data, Memphis Data Hub, public records requests, direct communications from the Memphis Police Department, and the MPD’s Facebook page, facebook.com/mpd1827 and X (Twitter) @MEM_PoliceDept account.
Data found in the tracker is as complete as possible. Unfortunately, some information is not always publically available, and at times a victim’s name, race, sex and/or other details are not provided by officials or family members.
Why does the total homicide count not match the incident count? The incidents in the Memphis Homicide Tracker are pulled from the Memphis Data Hub. The city only counts incidents and not victims. If one incident has 2 victims, the city counts 1 event. The victim count is pulled from Memphis Police Homicide Bureau data. The two data sets are cross referenced and multiple victims will be listed in applicable incidents.
The incident address is occasionally incorrect, why? The address provided by the Memphis Data Hub is a generalized block address. If available from another source, a more accurate location may be provided in the incident list.
How often is the data updated? We strive to update the tracker daily or as soon as new data becomes available. However, this does not mean the overall count will change. These updates often complete missing information or correct entries.
The count seems to occasionally move up and down, what does that mean? The official homicide tally comes from the Memphis Police Department's homicide bureau. When an investigation is ongoing, new details may be discovered that change how the death is classified. This can affect the overall number.
Is this tracker associated with any media outlet? No. The Memphis Homicide Tracker is an independent project created and managed by private citizens. While the numbers and information are compiled from police and city data and media outlets, credit is attributed to the respective outlet. Any information written or produced by our team will be noted.
